According to the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, research suggests that approximately 25% of American children will experience at least one traumatic event before the age of 16. Years of research and education about how trauma shows up for students in the classroom have driven districts to create trauma sensitive environments and embed trauma informed practices in their Multi Tiered System of Support. With access to trauma care in the educational setting, some students may develop the concept of post-traumatic growth. This presentation will review how post-traumatic growth is facilitated from the research of Tedeschi and Calhoun and how the application of an art therapy directive was used as a metaphor to transform trauma for a student. Participants will be invited to engage in an art making activity that is a metaphor for transformation. No art skills are necessary.
