Transformation After Trauma: Using Art to Visualize Post Traumatic Growth

According to the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, research suggests that approximately 25% of American children will experience at least one traumatic event before the age of 16. Years of research and education about how trauma shows up for students in the classroom have driven districts to create trauma sensitive environments and embed trauma informed practices in their Multi Tiered System of Support. With access to trauma care in the educational setting, some students may develop the concept of post-traumatic growth. This presentation will review how post-traumatic growth is facilitated from the research of Tedeschi and Calhoun and how the application of an art therapy directive was used as a metaphor to transform trauma for a student. Participants will be invited to engage in an art making activity that is a metaphor for transformation. No art skills are necessary.

Session Desired Outcomes: Participants will:
  • Understand the definition of post-traumatic growth
  • Learn the 5 ways post-traumatic growth can be facilitated
  • Learn about an art directive that is a metaphor for transforming trauma

Evaluation of Student Stress & Trauma Response

"Trauma-informed school" is not synonymous with "Healing-centered school". Youth who experience chronic stress and trauma need integrated school-community support that doesn't recognize boundaries or a time card. Healing requires a community that is aware, present, willing and interconnected. This session will share student stress data, available evaluation tools, and a trauma response framework for assisting students with acute stress responses.

Outcomes:

Understanding Sensory Processing and Regulation

Sensory regulation is the ability to process the sensory information gathered from our senses from the environment to plan and organize behavior for learning (Piccardi & Glia, 2022). According to Dunn (2007), an expert in sensory processing, there are four patterns of sensory processing which are based on how self-regulation and neurological thresholds interact with each other. In this module the participants will learn about the major sensory systems, the definition of neurological thresholds, the four patterns of sensory processing, and sensory diets. Examples will be provided of how each sensory system might be impacted when students experience sensory processing difficulties. Sensory-based interventions and common sensory tools will be explored and explained for participants to better support students in the classroom. Data collection will also be reviewed for proper documentation of sensory-based interventions. By the end of this module, participants will apply their knowledge by reviewing a case study to demonstrate how to appropriately select materials and apply guiding principles.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Understand the four sensory processing neurological thresholds.
2. Learn at least two sensory strategies for each of the four neurological thresholds.
3. Learn at least three sensory activities to help student with sensory regulation

Mental Health Leadership - An Educational Perspective

Mental Health Leadership in the school setting takes resilience, empathy, authenticity, and the ability to adapt when facing systemic or individual challenges. Educational Mental Health Leaders must embrace change alongside their colleagues to ensure the best outcomes for students. Leadership is one of the most highly researched topics on the planet and takes many forms. Mental health leadership encompasses creating supportive and inclusive environments that prioritize the well-being of all individuals. This involves implementing policies and practices that promote mental wellness in our schools, workplaces, and communities, along with fostering cultures of empathy, understanding, and support. Mental Health Leaders in the school setting need to inspire others to prioritize mental health systems of support and cultivate resilience. Leadership must work towards creating environments where mental health is valued and destigmatized. This session will also dive into leadership styles and support participants on their mental health leadership journey. Whether you possess innate leadership qualities or you are building a leadership skillset, educational mental health leadership can be enhanced by embracing Nelson Mandela’s vision to lead with “simplicity and humility”.

When ERMHS is Not Enough

This session will discuss the continuum of placement options from public school placements through RTC placements for students with mental health concerns when general counseling services are not enough to meet the Student’s needs. What other options should school districts consider in the public school setting, such as specific programs and placements within the public school? If the public school setting cannot meet the student’s needs, when should we be considering other types of placement and services? The presenters will discuss cases that support moving a child to a more restrictive setting such as nonpublic schools and residential treatment centers and what factors are considered when making those decisions. Additionally, we will look at other service options and supports such as wrap around services and support services outside of the school day that might be necessary to address the student’s educational needs related to mental health.

Educators’ Trauma-Informed Responses for Children Adversely Affected by War: A Ukrainian Story

Two years ago, the Russian Federation began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. As with all wars, children are the innocent victims. This presentation tells the story of how Ukrainian educators have courageously responded to meeting their students' academic, social, and emotional needs. As mental health specialists, there are many lessons that we can take from their story.

Outcomes:
  1. Provide an overview of how educators and school-based mental health professionals are supporting Ukrainian students who the Russian Federation invasion has adversely affected.
  2. Review recent research and educationally related articles on the topics of educators’ trauma-informed responses and strengthening the resiliency of their students.
  3. Describe the work of the Ukrainian NGO Voices of Children in their support of Ukrainian children, parents, and educators affected by the war.
  4. Identify practices and interventions that have applicability to supporting children in this country adversely affected by violence and other adverse childhood experiences.
  5. Provide information on ways to support the work of Ukrainian educators and school-related mental health providers.
